If you don’t want to read, I’ll explain the key bullet points, but please read them afterwords:
This is not “we didn’t protect him enough.”
This is not “the government screwed up some random detail or accidentally let his killer loose.”
The 111th Military Intelligence had a team taking pictures of his balcony during the assassination.
They brought in a Special Forces 8-Man Sniper Team from the 20th.
Memphis Police withdrew their regular protection detail from him.
A jury of 12 people, six black and six white, found the United States Government guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.

The arguments against the enfranchisement of children are identical to those used to oppose suffrage for women, immigrants, former slaves, the illiterate and the poor in general. “They are innocent and cannot understand politics. They will be taken advantage of and manipulated by the political interests of those more sophisticated than they. They aren’t ready for the responsibility.” But what readies people for responsibility is being allowed to take some. People become informed and savvy about those areas of life where they can exercise some power. It is powerlessness that creates passivity. When children are treated with respect, given choice and expected to have opinions that matter, they have options and make choices. I wonder what it must have been like, what dignity it must have conferred on children of the Iroquois Confederacy that any child over three was welcome to speak about matters of group importance in the tribal councils…. Nevertheless, children resist, both their own condition and the pressures to take on the perpetrator roles of the adults around them. Children have far less tolerance for overt injustice than do adults. From Soweto to Managua we have seen young people take to the streets and force the issue, propelling mass movements forward into open rebellion almost faster than adults could build organizations behind them.

[tw: abuse]

Some survivors really struggle with politics, social justice, and accountability. Many survivors have been told their whole lives that they’re worthless, bad, evil, or disgusting. And being called out on privilege and being held accountable for your language and behavior can feel a lot like being told you’re worthless, bad, evil, and disgusting. So many survivors automatically reject politics (and social justice and accountability conversations) because it often feels/sounds like the abuse they survived.

It’s not the same; power dynamics of abuse are absent in accountability conversations and good social justice. But it can take some people a lot of healing to see the difference between holding the rage of oppressed peoples out of compassion and solidarity, and being forced to manage the rage of an abuser out of self-defense.

Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!
From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.
It was passed unanimously today by the Senate :-D

UNANIMOUSLY. USA, get with the damned program.

I am an unapologetic marriage abolitionist, which means that I believe that the financial and legalized structural advantages currently attached to the institution of marriage in this country should not be linked to the practice of marriage as such, but should be available to all people who want to collaborate on home, family, support and love on their own terms.

There are the occasions that men—intellectual men, clever men, engaged men—insist on playing devil’s advocate, desirous of a debate on some aspect of feminist theory or reproductive rights or some other subject generally filed under the heading: Women’s Issues. These intellectual, clever, engaged men want to endlessly probe my argument for weaknesses, want to wrestle over details, want to argue just for fun—and they wonder, these intellectual, clever, engaged men, why my voice keeps raising and why my face is flushed and why, after an hour of fighting my corner, hot tears burn the corners of my eyes. Why do you have to take this stuff so personally? ask the intellectual, clever, and engaged men, who have never considered that the content of the abstract exercise that’s so much fun for them is the stuff of my life.

Melissa McEwan, of course, on the terrible bargain. My life as a woman, as a queer person, as a fat person, is not your thought experiment.  (via sanitywatchers)

This really struck a chord. Even my boyfriend, feminist that he is, can have this reaction when I’m in tears after an NPR story. This is my fucking life. Excuse me if I can’t remove the personal.

(via curiousgeorgiana)

I reblogged this before, but I like it a lot so I’m reblogging it again.

This whole thing is the reason why confrontations with people that I consider friends always leaves me crying. Like, I get so angry and so flustered because it’s not just some stupid game to me, like it is to them. It’s something that’s real and personal.

(via liquidiousfleshbag)

I will always reblog this.

(via loveintheshadowsistheonlykind)

Which is why I don’t argue with my family anymore. Same-sex marriage, abortion, reproductive rights, equal pay, etc. are not just some political talking point, they affect my life.

I have never really understood exactly what a ‘liberal’ is, since I have heard ‘liberals’ express every conceivable opinion on every conceivable subject. As far as I can tell, you have the extreme right, who are fascist, racist capitalist dogs like Ronald Reagan, who come right out and let you know where they’re from. And on the opposite end, you have the left, who are supposed to be committed to justice, equality, and human rights. And somewhere between these two points is the liberal. As far as I’m concerned, ‘liberal’ is the most meaningless word in the dictionary. History has shown me that as long as some white middle class people can live high on the hog, take vacations to Europe, send their children to private schools, and the reap the benefits of their white skin privileges, then they are ‘liberals’. But when times get hard and money gets tight, they pull off that liberal mask and you think you’re talking to Adolf Hitler. They feel sorry for the so-called underprivileged just as long as they can maintain their own privileges.

Participating in Direct Actions: A Guide for transgender people

Direct actions, protests, and acts of civil disobedience are powerful tools for change. Participating in these actions may also put you at risk of arrest and/or mistreatment by police and in jail. When participating in direct actions, transgender people should understand their rights and take necessary precautions before
accepting the risk of arrest. If you are planning on attending a protest and you are not transgender, consider what you can do to prevent mistreatment of transgender people and other vulnerable participants. From identity documents to detainment procedures, this resource offers an overview of the considerations transgender people should think about when preparing or participating in a direct action.

It’s not about being against corporations.
It’s about corporations not paying their fair share of taxes and in some case not any at all.
It’s about corporations taking the jobs from America and setting up overseas where they can pay workers 40 cents an hour.
It’s about corporations that donate money to politicians so they continue to deregulate and let them get away with actions that negatively effect the environment.
It’s about corporations that take part in the illegal practice of “price fixing” eliminating the competition between businesses.
It’s about an amendment that states corporations are people and money is speech, the “profits before people” corporations.
We want tax loopholes closed, corporate personhood repealed, regulations on banks so the American people don’t get screwed over and the economy collapses again, action to end offshore tax havens, and that’s only a fraction of what OWS is about.
