The Lair: Airy and full of light

joemccarthyblues:

In our gradual slide to a dystopia reminiscent of the 1930s, the Supreme Court is asking itself once again, what’s so special about being a PoC in this day and age and why should we care?

It is evident that in the mindset of many Americans, we are in a post racial society simply because the right wing has veiled their language targeting primarily blacks and latinos. They think that because we treat PoC like humans, there is no need the recognize the additional barriers and problems that persist with being a minority race in a country where the majority refuse to believe in instances of institutional biases.

The one thing that I haven’t heard in this discussion of race, merit and integration through the force of law is, why are young adults with familial connections to the school through alumni given preferential treatment without even a small percentage of the anger and resentment that comes with proposing ways to integrate PoC into college campuses?

Alumni are given preferential treatment at many universities throughout the country, with the children of affluent university graduates being given spots that could be used to guarantee opportunity for working class and minority students. Where is the outrage? What happened to talk of merit above all? Why have we allowed this educational class preference to develop in silence while efforts to mitigate the effects are shunned?

I suppose whatever the white middle class wants, the white middle class gets.
